The Core Importance For Strong Structures
Sandwich construction has been well-established in the composites industry for well over 40 years.

In principle, a sandwich consists of two skins or facings with a core material in between. The skins take up normal stresses by giving the structure a hard-wearing surface. The core material absorbs the shear stresses which are generated by loads and distributes them over a wider area.

Compared to single-skin laminates, the sandwich concept offers considerable improvements in flexural rigidity and flexural strength. By doubling the thickness of the core, the improvements are even greater yet the weight increase is minimal. The mechanical efficiency of cored sandwich material can be drastically increased by increasing the thickness of the core.

ArmaFORM PET core materials, when used with high-strength skins, provide the ideal combination of strength, stiffness and toughness. Armacell’s structural core foams work by increasing the performance of composite parts while optimizing weight.
